Day 9 – Saturday 30 December

Today I finally managed to get into the National Archaeology Museum! This is one of the most important museums in the world, due to the amount of treasures recovered from Pompei and Herculaneum, among other places. Unfortunately some of the exhibits I especially wanted to see (the temple of Isis, for example) were not available.

Right, the vestibule just inside the entrance of the museum.

Darius fleeing the battle

Left (a favourite of mine since I first saw a reproduction as a kid), the famous mosaic of the battle of Issus, at which Alexander the Great defeated Darius (shown escaping on his chariot).

Right, the Greek poet Sappho.

The rain was still coming down when I left the museum, so to stay dry I spent a while rummaging around the antique shops on the nearby Via S. Maria di Costantinopoli.

That evening I had dinner in La Brace near the Piazza Garibaldi, where I
snapped this little poem, in the Napulinato dialect, in honour of the restaurant.
